ConstructionMate.co.uk – Your Trusted Mate in the Trade

Why Trades Leave The Big Directories

A straightforward comparison of trade-directory advertising: published prices, no shared leads, no commission and reviews that stay yours.

Why Trades Leave The Big Directories

You should not have to ring a salesman to find out what advertising costs.

Most trades we speak to have been burned by a directory at least once. Not always because the product was poor, but because of the way it was sold, what it cost by year three, or what happened when they tried to leave.

Here is what commonly goes wrong — and how Construction Mate works differently. Where we are not better, we say so.

1. You cannot find out the price

On many large directories, the price is not shown on the website. You fill in a form, a representative calls, and the figure can depend on your trade, postcode and the package being offered. By the time you hear it, you have already had the pitch.

Construction Mate puts the price on the page. You can see the plan, what is included and what it renews at before entering any card details. No form, no callback and no sales representative. Read it, decide and get started in a few minutes — or close the tab. That is fine too.

2. Your enquiry is sold to several competitors

On pay-per-lead platforms, the same job can be offered to several trades at once. You may pay for the lead whether you win the work or not, while quoting against businesses that received the identical enquiry. Often, the first person to call back has the advantage.

Construction Mate does not sell leads. A homeowner finds your profile and calls you directly, or submits an enquiry through your profile that comes to you alone. There is no commission on the work you win and no per-enquiry charge.

What you are paying for is visibility. The conversation after that is yours to have.

3. Your reviews should belong to you

Years of five-star feedback can become tied to a platform. If you stop paying, you may no longer be able to use that review history in the same way. It is worth checking the terms before building too much of your reputation on any one directory.

Construction Mate displays your Google reviews. Those reviews sit on your Google Business Profile, not inside a private review system controlled by us. If you cancel your Construction Mate listing, your Google reviews remain yours because they were never ours to hold.

4. A lead forecast is not a promise

Some directories quote likely lead volumes during a sales call, while the contract describes those figures as estimates rather than guarantees. The reality is that enquiry numbers can vary widely by trade, area, season, reviews, competition and the quality of your profile.

We do not forecast leads because that would be guessing. We will tell you where your listing can appear and what your profile will look like, but no directory can honestly promise a fixed number of enquiries for every trade in every location.

5. You should know renewal costs before you pay

Long minimum terms, automatic renewals and higher second-year prices are common frustrations in directory advertising. It is sensible to check the renewal amount, cancellation process and notice period before signing up.

Construction Mate keeps it straightforward: one year, one published price, with the renewal price shown before payment. The current Featured Mate price is £75 for the first year and £99 a year after that. We email 30 days before renewal, and you can downgrade to a free listing or cancel from your dashboard.

There is no exit fee because there is nothing to exit.

6. Build something that points back to your business

Every enquiry routed through a platform, every review held on it and every customer landing on its domain can leave little behind if you cancel. A directory listing should support your wider marketing, not become your whole online presence.

Your Construction Mate profile is designed to point people towards your business. It includes your public contact details, a link to your website and an indexed profile page with LocalBusiness structured data. It can support your own website, Google Business Profile and word-of-mouth reputation; it is not a replacement for them.

Side-by-side comparison

Feature Typical pay-per-lead directory Construction Mate
Price published on the website Often requires an enquiry Yes, shown upfront
Sales call required Usually Never
Enquiries shared with other trades Common on lead platforms No — profile enquiries come to you
Commission on work won Varies by provider None
Per-lead charge Common None
Review ownership May be tied to the platform Your Google reviews remain yours
Link to your own website Varies Dofollow website link
Minimum term Often 12 months One year; downgrade or cancel anytime
Free option Limited or unavailable Free forever, with no card required

“Typical pay-per-lead directory” describes a common model across the sector, not any one provider. Terms, costs and service levels differ by business and by the deal offered. Always read your own contract before signing.

What we are not going to pretend

Three honest points, because you will find them out anyway.

  • We are smaller. The biggest directory brands run television advertising and have more homeowner traffic than we do. If sheer volume is your only priority, we will not match them yet.
  • Paid listings receive paid prominence. Featured and Best Mate listings appear above free listings. We label this clearly wherever results are shown.
  • A listing is not a full marketing strategy. A directory profile is one place homeowners can find you. It does not replace your own website, Google Business Profile, good work or word of mouth.

Common questions

Do you sell my details to other companies?

No. Construction Mate is a directory, not a lead-selling platform. Homeowners contact businesses directly from their profiles.

Do you take a percentage of the work I win?

No. There is no commission on jobs you win through your Construction Mate profile.

What happens to my profile if I stop paying?

You can cancel or downgrade to the free plan. Your Google reviews remain on your Google Business Profile, and your business website remains your own.

Can I try the free listing first?

Yes. A free Construction Mate listing is available with no card required, so you can create a profile before choosing a paid visibility option.
